June 18 Event Details: Service project

We are very excited about our Girls Night Salad Potluck on June 18th at 6:30! Along with the fun activities we will have going on (for mothers, daughters, friends, and loved ones of all ages to do together), one of the stations will be service oriented.

The Story behind the Service Project:
The Tanners are flying to pick up their son Elder Kade Tanner from the Mozambique Maputo Mission (in Africa). They are bringing an extra suitcase to pack full of things to donate to the members in Africa.
Elder Tanner is pictured here on the left
This past conference, Elder Neil Anderson gave THIS TALK and quoted Elder Tanner's mission president:

"President Paulo Kretly of the Mozambique Maputo Mission shared this experience: “It is common in Mozambique [for] couples to live their lives together [without being married because] African tradition require[s] an expensive dowry to marry, a dowry most couples can’t afford.”29
Members and missionaries thought and prayed about how to help. The answer to their prayers was that they would emphasize the law of chastity and the importance of marriage and eternal families. And while helping couples to repent and legally marry, they would teach of the happiness that only comes through following Jesus Christ.
Married on Friday, they were baptized with their older children on Saturday.30 Friends and family were invited to “come and see,” and hundreds did “come and see.”
Following the baptism, one sister said, “We needed to choose whether to follow the traditions of our fathers or to follow Jesus Christ. We chose to follow Christ.”31

Elder Tanner has told his parents that the most beneficial thing they could bring from America are wedding dresses. It is very difficult to afford any type of wedding.  He almost spends as much time planning weddings in order to have baptisms. A major setback is not having  anything nice to wear for their wedding.

If you have a wedding dress that you would like to donate to the people of Mozambique, Sheri Tanner is collecting gently used wedding dresses that she could bring with her to Africa to ease the burden of getting married in order to be baptized.  You can bring it to our activity or contact Sheri Tanner directly. If you would like to enclose a photo of you in the dress with your testimony, that would be so meaningful.

Another need: Gently used white shirts to give the young missionaries that are going out to serve missions. It is almost impossible to find white shirts in Africa. Smaller sizes would be appreciated as it will be for young men going out to serve. The church is young in Mozambique and it is exciting to see them send out missionaries of their own. This Mozambican missionary was just called to serve in England!

In addition, the members in Africa have no religious pictures hanging in their homes. As a ward, we will be personalizing Christ-centered pictures that night. If possible, bring a small (wallet sized) family photo to attach to the back of their picture to make it a more personalized gift.

Lastly, the Tanners are looking for a suitcase that they can carry everything in but leave it there in Africa to save on the cost of flying it back. This will be a donation.

Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation in this wonderful activity!

May 14, 7:00 PM - 72 Hour Kit Improvement Night

72 HOUR Kit Improvement Night: I CAN DO THIS!
Tuesday, May 14 at 7:00 pm
at the church

This is going to be a night for everyone! Whether starting from scratch and buying just a box of granola bars  or adding extra emergency supplies, we ALL can improve our 72 our kits. It's on the back of all our minds, and this is the night to put it into action!

This is what we plan on doing:

  1. We have gone to local stores and hand picked with the most inexpensive and beneficial items in mind from our local Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Sam's Club. We put them all on a list in an order form.
  2. Print off the order form HERE. Decide what would be best for your family to add to your kit. Keep in mind this is just to get you by during the first 3 days of a major disaster. CLICK HERE for photos of some of the products on the order form. The food items are intended to be switched out every 6 months. A good way to remember is to do it during General Conference (April and October). Remember, the purpose of these items is to have something that you can grab and go in just a few minutes that will get you by until further assistance.
  3. Turn in the sheet with the money to a member of the RS presidency, and we will purchase everything for you and bring it to the activity on May 14. Easy as that!
  4. A few of the items need to be purchased by MAY 5 (they are marked on the sheet). If you are not interested in those items, Sunday MAY 12 is the deadline for the forms and money. Make checks payable to Ginger Thompson.
  5. Come Tuesday, May 14 and bring your bags to fill up and assemble and get a peace of mind! See other displays to get inspired to get more prepared.

  • Empty Milk Jugs and Soda Bottles are a great economical way to store each family member's food (1 milk jug per family member) and water (soda bottle) for the kits. (Thanks, Pinterest!) If you don't have bags or backpacks already, start setting your jugs and bottles now - wash them thoroughly and let them dry upside down for a few days and then bring them to the activity and we can fill them together on the 14th.

  • Interested in making a "GO" binder? HERE  is a blog that has templates you can use when you assemble yours. It is recommended to keep it in a fireproof/waterproof safe that can be purchased online.

  • Come and be inspired from others, roll up your sleeves, and put your mind at peace! Looking forward to supporting each other in this very important aspect of our lives!

April 23, 7:00pm - Ice Cream Social

Tuesday, April 23rd  7:00 pm
 The Clark’s Home

We will be playing a game:
  • Please bring your favorite thing (candy, poem, book, etc) as a simple gift in a closed paper bag. (It doesn't have to be the brown bag provided in the handout)
  • Write 3 unique clues about yourself on the outside of the bag.
  • Everyone will pick a bag that looks interesting and get to know a new friend!
We had a great time with a lot of laughs! We all learned some fun things about each other. Thank you Sara for opening your home up!
